Criteria to become a volunteer

Active member of one of the following OCDSB 

recognized faith communities: 

○ Baha’I ○

○ Buddist ○

○ Christian ○

○ Hindu ○

○ Muslim ○

○ Jewish ○

○ Sikh ○

Volunteer Commitment

Volunteer Commitment

  • Commitment of one academic year.
  • Minimum 2 visits to your assigned school per month.
  • Completion of volunteer training.
  • Attend a minimum of one of the twice-yearly professional development gatherings for Spiritual Care Volunteers.
  • Submit a School Visitor Log each month.

All SCSS Volunteers are provided with facilitated and self-directed training prior to visiting schools or hosting online sessions.


Topics include:

  • Basic Expectations of SC Volunteers (Answering emails, visitor log, reporting incidences, responding to crisis calls, etc).
  • Duty of Care 
  • Duty to Report
  • Pastoral Care Models in Schools
  • Creating Safe and Brave Spaces for Youth
  • Listening without Judgement
  • Ethics and Confidentiality
  • Seeking Help for a Student and Resources Available
